Social Worker Day in Russia appeared in 2000 - at the turn of two millennia. The basis for the emergence of the holiday was the Presidential Decree of October 27, 2000. The date of the holiday was also not chosen by chance - it was on June 8 that the first social institution in Russia appeared, or rather, Russian Empire. In 1701, Peter I ordered the establishment new position in an almshouse for the elderly, sick and poor - one “healthy” worker who was supposed to monitor and care for the sick. Thus, at the beginning of the 18th century, the first social workers appeared in the country, whose goal was to provide assistance to those in need on a professional basis.

A holiday with this name exists not only in Russia. There is Social Worker Day in almost every country of the post-Soviet space.

Kazakhstan celebrates Social Worker's Day on the last Sunday in October. In this country, social workers got their own holiday quite recently – in 2011. However, the authorities are determined to demonstrate the importance of the new professional holiday. Thus, in every major city in the country, representatives of the city administration congratulate workers of social institutions - both state and public - and present the most distinguished of them with memorable gifts, awarding diplomas and letters of gratitude.

According to statistics, about four thousand people work in the social sphere in Armenia, and at the moment the state intends to increase their number - as ministry officials admit, there are many unresolved problems in the field of protecting the population, and each of them requires a special approach. History of social protection

At the official level, Social Worker's Day has been celebrated only since 2000, although the idea of ​​​​celebrating it appeared 6 years earlier - it was expressed at the annual congress of the Association of Social Workers. It was not by chance that June 8 was chosen as a holiday date - it was on this day in 1701 PeterI signed an imperial decree, which established the creation of almshouses for the poor, sick and old people, in which these persons were fully supported. The emperor decreed that for every 10 guests in the almshouse there should be 1 healthy person who would help them - this was the first prototype of a modern social worker. The Baptism of Rus' marked the beginning of social protection. Prince Vladimir, who baptized Rus', was one of the most striking examples of the highest patronage of the poor and sick. It was by his will that the clergy and churches were to help all those in need. Yaroslav the Wise continued his father’s endeavors - the code of laws he created, “Russian Truth,” already contained articles of a social nature. Yaroslav's grandson, Vladimir Monomakh, was also distinguished by his social instructions - he decreed to feed the poor, take care of orphans, and obliged the strong to care for the weak. However, life in those days, feudal fragmentation and Tatar-Mongol raids contributed to the development of beggary and vagrancy, which the churches could not overcome on their own.

By the 16th century, begging reached such proportions that entire settlements of the poor grew around churches.

In fact, these were professional beggars, because finding food this way was much easier than working. Realizing this, Ivan the Terrible, who came to the throne, takes control of social protection, creating infrastructure for the disadvantaged and sick, and employing the healthy. Further attempts to eradicate professional beggary are already attributed to Peter I - those who feigned injuries and begged for alms were at first simply caught and sent home, and from 1712 they were branded and sent to hard labor. In addition, Peter built a wide network of hospitals, almshouses, orphanages and other public charity institutions. This network was significantly expanded by Empress Catherine II, whose work was continued by Maria Feodorovna.

After the revolution of 1917, all powers for social protection passed to the People's Commissar of Social Security, on the basis of which it was possible to create a full-fledged social security department only in 1946 - the Ministry of Social Security of the RSFSR was formed. However, the rapid development of the social security system began only in the 50s and continued until the end of the 80s, the products of which we all still use.

Today there are about 600 thousand social workers working in Russia, and each of them deserves our most sincere congratulations.

The urgent need for social workers in the market is beyond doubt - this profession is one of the most in demand in Russia. It turns out that many social workers find themselves in a position worse than their clients, which is unfair and even insulting.
