I found an interesting article, it seemed interesting to me, because the “SUNLIGHT” jewelry stores always raised some doubts in me.

Story

In 1995, the ONIX jewelry company was founded. She was engaged in wholesale supplies of jewelry to Russian market. Over the years it has become very large and successful.

In 2005, ONIX created its own brand, SUNLIGHT, whose mission is to make exquisite diamond jewelry more accessible to Russian women.

By 2009, more than 1,000 jewelry stores across the country were presenting the SUNLIGHT collection to their customers, and at the end of the year the first branded store opened in the Crocus City Mall shopping center.

SL today is an actively developing federal retail chain.

Jewelry is made in Hong Kong - the capital of world jewelry fashion. Jewelry production in Hong Kong covers the whole spectrum from inexpensive to expensive items. Hong Kong manufacturers have established themselves in the field of making and processing jewelry with small stones. Hong Kong is a leader in the production of pure gold products and has long been recognized as the largest center for the production of jade products.

There are only two questions that torment everyone: why are diamond jewelry so cheap? Maybe not diamonds at all?

Let's start with the basics. A diamond is a cut diamond. Diamond is a natural mineral.

SUNLIGHT jewelry truly contains diamonds. BUT, what does the price of diamonds consist of?

Characteristics of 4C

The evaluation of a stone depends on four 4 C indicators: Carat - weight, Clarity - clarity, Color - color, Cut - quality of cut. The Russian assessment system (TS) is slightly different.

The most common diamond quality rating system in the world is G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America). A weekly price list for Rapaport diamonds is also published in New York. It is used by dealers around the world to navigate changes in market prices for diamonds.

1. Diamond weight measure- carat There are 100 units in 1 carat and it is equal to 0.20 grams.

By weight, diamonds are divided into three groups: small (up to 0.29 carats), medium (from 0.30 to 0.99 carats), large (from 1.00 carats and more)

Most stones in SUNLIGHT jewelry are up to 0.29 carats. Run-up from 0.01 to 0.37

2. Cut. The quality of cut in the diamond business is of great importance; the higher it is, the higher the cost of the stone. Through experiments and taking into account the physical and optical characteristics of the diamond, the ideal cut proportions were derived to achieve maximum brilliance and the maximum play of light inside the stone - 57 facets (facets).

Sometimes a culet is considered as another facet, which is why some write a cut standard of 58 facets.

Small diamonds cannot be cut according to the standard of 57 facets, so they are cut with 17 facets. But for large stones over 1 carat, the processing was complicated, so the “Highlight Cut” cut with 73 facets (41 facets at the top, 32 at the bottom), the “royal” cut with 86 facets (49 facets at the top, 37 at the bottom) and the “Majestic” cut appeared. cut with 102 facets (61 facets at the top, 41 at the bottom).

One of the best cuts is made at the Diamond Exchange in Israel. Almost 50% of all jewelry diamonds in the world are Israeli cut.

The cut of a diamond is also differentiated by its shape.

The classic round cut is considered common. Any other types are classified as so-called “fantasy” forms.

Only a high-quality cut stone reveals all its beauty. A poorly cut or polished stone will look quite pale, even despite its other outstanding characteristics.

Diamonds cut according to G.I.A. can be divided into the following categories: Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good and Poor. Different quality cut results from deviations from the ideal proportions of the stone in favor of its weight. For example, an "Excellent" cut would be equivalent to an "Ideal" cut, but with a wider table and slightly modified crown and pavilion angles.

The specifications establish ranges of geometric cutting parameters according to which Kr-57 round diamonds can be divided into groups (in descending order of geometric parameters, symmetry, polishing quality) “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, and Kr- 17 - into two groups - “A” and “B”. Diamonds of famous fancy cut shapes are divided into two groups - “A” and “B”.

3.Color- diamond color. In fact, a diamond can be almost any color. There are two groups: cape and fancy diamonds.

The cape group includes the familiar white diamonds and diamonds with a yellowish tint. The standard is considered a colorless stone or with a slightly blue tint.

Any other colors are called fancy: red, green, purple, blue, black, brown, etc.

According to the G.I.A. system The color gradations of cape diamonds are designated by letters from D to Z. According to the Russian system, by numbers.

Color table in Russian and GIA systems.

Natural fancy diamonds are very rare and their price is much higher than colorless stones. The price per carat for them reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars. The most expensive are red and blue stones. A fancy diamond is not so easy to buy; entire queues are formed of people who want to own this creation. Therefore, scientists figured out how to change the color of the stone. There are two main ways to do this:

1. Irradiation (+heating)

2. HPHT (High Pressure and High Temperature)

The HPHT method allows you not only to change the color to fancy, but also to whiten the stone. It is almost impossible to diagnose such stones. To distinguish them from non-refined stones, there is a requirement to apply a special marking to the girdle of such stones during production, but theoretically this can be removed by polishing.

But the most common method is irradiation, i.e. irradiation plus subsequent heat treatment. 99.99% of all colored diamonds on the market are irradiated. Very often, when selling stones, sellers do not even mention processing, since it goes without saying. The cost of such stones is hundreds and thousands of times less than the cost of non-refined analogues and does not differ much from the price of the raw materials from which they were obtained.

The black diamond deserves a special mention

A black diamond is obtained from a diamond with abundant graphite inclusions in its structure. There are so many of these inclusions that they create the coal-black hue of the stone. Such a mineral is extremely difficult to process, as it can easily split during cutting. At its core, a black diamond is a flawed stone. They are valued much lower than colorless or fancy ones and can cost several tens of dollars per carat.

But there are also natural transparent black diamonds that are not “burdened down” with a mass of graphite inclusions, like carbonado. There are only a few untreated black diamonds known in the world. Of course, the price tag on them is prohibitive.

For the most part, black diamonds are irradiated.

4. Clarity– clarity of the diamond. This indicator also directly affects the cost of the diamond.

Pure diamonds are very rare in nature. During the formation process, inhomogeneous areas – inclusions – appear in the diamond structure. These may be splits, cleavage cracks, or opacities from other trapped minerals. At 10x magnification, stones are checked for defects.

Correlation between diamond clarity scales according to specifications and G.I.A.

* 1 - clean
* 2-3, 3-4 - very small inclusions
* 5-6 - very small minor inclusions
* 7-8 - small noticeable inclusions
* 9-10, 11, 12 - inclusions visible to the naked eye

F and IF (Flawless and Internally Flawless) – Pure and Internally Pure. These diamonds have no internal inclusions or are undetectable under 10x magnification. Very rare.

VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Small Inclusions) - Barely noticeable inclusions. Very difficult to detect at 10x magnification.

VS1 and VS2 (Very Small Inclusions) – Barely noticeable inclusions. The smallest inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and are difficult to detect at 10x magnification.

SI1 and SI2 (Small Inclusions) – Small inclusions. Tiny inclusions that can be detected at 10x magnification and in some cases (SI2) inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

I1 and I2 and I3 (Imperfect) – Noticeable Inclusions. Inclusions are visible both at 10x magnification and with the naked eye.

As was written above, pure diamonds are very rare in nature, and the fewer defects there are in a stone, the more it costs. As in the case of “coloring” diamonds, scientists have figured out how to improve the clarity of a diamond.

To mask these defects, a small hole is first drilled with a laser, and then the inclusion is burned out with it. After this, the resulting cavities (including natural cracks) are filled with a special substance that has optical characteristics close to those of diamond.

This procedure is expensive, so it is justified when processing large stones from 0.5 carats. Also, if the stone has been refined for purity, then this should be indicated in the comments to it. Most often it is designated as Clarity enhanced and/or filled. Almost any gemologist can distinguish refined stones.

Let's summarize everything written above.

Since all of us, ordinary people, are not gemologists, and in any case do not walk around with a microscope, when buying jewelry with diamonds we will have to trust what will be written in the document for it. And this means understanding the abbreviated notation.

According to the specifications, the diamond passport will contain the following entry, for example, Kr-57 0.35 3/4A.

This means: a round cut diamond with 57 facets, weighing 0.35 carats, has a 3rd color group, 4th clarity group, cut group - A.

Example according to G.I.A.

In general, never buy a diamond without a certificate, it is better to expert opinion was according to G.I.A. or our TU.

Also pay attention to the fluorescence of diamonds. There should be a line in the passport stating that it is not there. This property of diamonds that are close to colorless in most cases reduces its value. Sometimes fluorescence increases its price, but this is rather an exception to the rule.

So, having understood the characteristics of a diamond, we now understand what the price of a stone consists of. Therefore, we return to where we started - the Sunlight brand.

Let us repeat, the diamonds from this company are natural. They are assessed at the Scientific Center for Certification and Evaluation of Jewelry, created in 2002 in Moscow by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the International Academy Nona Dmitrievna Dronova. You can even get a certificate online from them: go to the website and enter the product article number.

And as already mentioned, SL jewelry is made in a Hong Kong factory. Hong Kong is an autonomous region of China, an offshore zone, i.e. with low taxation and without government intervention in economic policy. This creates low prices for goods plus cheap labor.

In fact, the question is different: why do you need diamonds?

If gems are your investment, then forget about Sunlight. Their diamonds are too small and have questionable characteristics. Remember, good stones are expensive!

Sunlight is budget jewelry with modern fashionable designs that are truly affordable for many. This is an excellent alternative to costume jewelry, which has no value at all.

For those who don’t like “hardware and glass” - Sunlight is just the thing. Moreover, they have very good products not only with diamonds, but also with rubies, sapphires, topazes, and onyx.

They write a lot about the fact that their products are made of poor quality, but it is definitely very difficult to answer here. The reviews we have studied from forums (1, 2) over the past couple of years have shown that it is not necessary every time, and production defects are also found in other companies. But for the most part, people are happy with their purchases from Sunlight. And in case of a defect they have a guarantee.

It is worth noting that the durability of the product is also affected by how the owner wears it. It is not recommended to wash dishes in rings, take a shower with a chain or other jewelry, or sleep in them. But “not recommended” does not mean prohibited, connoisseurs simply treat them like clothes - wear them, take them off.

But that's not all you need to know about "girls' best friends." To buy diamonds, you must first mine diamonds. It so happens that the global diamond business belongs to the two largest players, De Beers and Alrosa (there are also BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, but they produce several times less).

De Beers was founded by British entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes at the end of the 19th century, when the main diamond deposit in South Africa, Kimberley, was discovered. The company receives exclusive rights to supply diamonds from a number of banks and becomes a monopolist. Until the 70s of the 20th century, De Beers controlled 95% of the market.

In the 70s, new diamond producing countries appeared, US antitrust policy began, but the main blow to De Beers was dealt by Lev Leviev, one of the sightholders of De Beers itself. During perestroika, Lev Leviev actively participated in the privatization of the Soviet economy. Leviev's diamond empire is gaining growth, gradually taking away world market shares from the historical monopolist. De Beers now controls about 40% of the world diamond market.

The corporation's head office is located in London, where all gem-quality diamonds are sourced. There, so-called parties are formed from them. Only a few merchants well known to the syndicate (there are currently up to 300 such “direct” buyers) are invited to participate in the acquisition of stones at fixed prices with immediate payment. Lots are sold only as a whole. Further sales and division of diamond lots are carried out either by direct buyers at diamond exchanges (sometimes called diamond clubs), or by several wholesale trading companies.

In addition, there is the so-called " open market", where diamonds are sold by countries independent of De Beers (Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Venezuela, etc.), or resold by companies that bought them from the syndicate. The main centers of this market are Antwerp (Belgium) and Hong Kong (China).

AK "Alrosa" - Russian company, founded in 1992 on the basis of diamond industry enterprises of the former USSR (PNO Yakutalmaz). From 2001 to 2008, under an agreement, Alrosa diamonds were sold to De Beers. Since 2009, ALROSA has been selling diamonds abroad independently. The ALROSA Group produces 97% of all diamonds in Russia, the share of diamond production on the world market in value terms is 25%.

The largest volume of Russian diamond exports came from Belgium, followed by Israel and India. Largest Russian manufacturer and the exporter of the finished rough diamond product is Kristall Production Association from Smolensk.

Today, De Beers is the leader in terms of diamond production in monetary terms, and the Russian AK ALROSA is the leader in terms of diamond production in carats.
