“Museum of Fashion” by Alexander Vasiliev: exhibition of costumes of the 20th century. Russian folk costume How the museum lives

A series of exhibition projects by the Alexander Vasiliev Foundation has started at VDNKh. During the year, pavilion No. 16 “Hydrometeorology” will host three exhibitions dedicated to 20th-century costume: “Spring and Fashion”, “Beach Fashion” and “Glamour of the 80s”.

The exhibition cycle opened with an exhibition entitled "Spring and fashion. Collection from the Alexander Vasiliev Foundation." Delicate colors, elegant stencil designs, plant and floral motifs, gauze scarves, fluffy skirts in the new-look style, introduced into fashion by Christian Dior in 1947, printed chintz and chiffon, crepe de Chine and crepe georgette - to the accompaniment of Soviet songs dedicated to spring , visitors to the exhibition will plunge into the nostalgic atmosphere of the twentieth century. The exhibition consisted of about 200 items: dresses, accessories, photographs, postcards and other artifacts from the Alexander Vasiliev Foundation. Guests will also enjoy the unusual floral decoration of the pavilion itself.

“Spring has a huge impact on fashion. Firstly, after hibernation, this is the first warm season when women and men begin to undress. Spring is a wonderful time when you don’t have to wear stockings and tights, gloves and mittens, fur coats and hats. Spring is an opportunity to switch to more joyful floral motifs in clothing."- says Alexander Vasiliev.

The exhibition presents world-class designer items made by famous French fashion houses: Dior, Patou, Lanvin, Cardin and others, and creations of famous domestic designers, in particular, exhibition curator Kirill Gasilin provided his own model, this luxurious dress in the new-look style, made of organdy and embroidered with artificial lilies of the valley.

“Many of the exhibits are associated with the names of famous singers, actresses and ballerinas. And, of course, the majority of the exhibition will consist of dresses from the Soviet period, made from captured fabric, created by private dressmakers or in ateliers, purchased in domestic department stores. The most interesting exhibit will be a suit made of synthetic straw from 1961, made in a special workshop for KGB officers,”- says Alexander Vasiliev.

The Exhibition Complex of the Historical Museum hosts the exhibition “Festive Clothes of the Peoples of Russia in the 19th-20th Centuries.”

The State Historical Museum has a rich ethnographic collection representing the multinational character of our state. Bright costume complexes of the 19th - early 20th centuries, complemented by jewelry, weapons, ethnographic objects made of wood, metal and ceramics from the collections of the State Historical Museum, make it possible to reveal the diversity and mutual influences of the cultures of the peoples of Russia.

The exhibition “Festive Clothes of the Peoples of Russia,” based on the collection of the State Historical Museum, will be exhibited in Moscow for the first time. The exhibition is based on the principle of showing ethnocultural zones within the main ethnocultural areas: the European region of Russia, the Caucasus, Siberia and the Far East.

The traditional outfit of Russians from the central regions of Russia will be presented by sets of festive clothing from Moscow, Vladimir, Tver and other provinces.

Materials from ethnographic expeditions will tell about the Russian North, including products with the finest embroidery, jewelry made from river pearls, etc. The South Russian tradition will be demonstrated by panel complexes, complemented by exotic “horned” magpies and beaded jewelry from Ryazan, Tula, Voronezh and other provinces. The viewer will see ancient ornamental elements made using embroidery and weaving techniques.

The mutual influences of different ethnic cultures can be traced throughout the exhibition. Samples of weaving of the Kasimov Tatars, closely related to Russian weaving of the Ryazan province, will be exhibited. The costumes of the peoples of the Volga region: Mordovians-Moksha and Mordvinians-Erzi, Mari, Chuvash and Udmurts, will be adjacent to Russian sundresses from the Simbirsk province. The influence of Tatar culture will be reflected in the colorfully woven shirts and aprons of the Finno-Ugric people, who traditionally prefer white clothing. Next to the festive clothes of a Bashkir woman there will be a costume of a Ural Cossack woman, preserved at the beginning of the 20th century. features of Russian clothing of the 18th century.

The clothing of the indigenous population of Western and Eastern Siberia - Teleuts, Buryats, Yakuts - will be exhibited next to the clothing of Russian Old Believers and other settlers from the European part of Russia.

Clothes made of reindeer fur and suede, embroidered with colored beads, samples of inlay made of leather and fur, costumes made of fish skin with magnificent ornaments will represent the indigenous population of Siberia and the Far East, including the small peoples of the Amur region.

Among the examples of the festive costume of the peoples of the North Caucasus, wedding clothes from Dagestan, with a clear influence of urban fashion, beautiful examples of gold embroidery, a unique outfit of a Nekrasovka Cossack woman, etc. will be exhibited. Among the exhibits of the exhibition, presented for the first time, visitors will be able to see new arrivals to the museum. Among them is a full ceremonial costume of an Adyghe woman.

Exhibition exhibits will be supported by cartographic, visual and photographic materials.

Ball gowns, corsets, silks, cute hats, elegant shoes... It’s easy to touch history, breathe in the subtle scent of bygone eras - the Moscow Fashion Museum was created for true connoisseurs of vintage collections.

The history of fashion is an interesting science

Fashion and costume museums operate in many European capitals. Using the fashion trends of the past, it is possible to reconstruct pictures of customs, morals and life values of all layers of society at different times.

There are many ways to study fashion. True connoisseurs of the history of costume know that you can still find unique pieces in private collections, among museum storerooms, and often the rarest things simply gather dust in forgotten chests of old apartments. Integrating everything found into one living collection, restoring and organizing it is not an easy task. Reviews from visitors report that this is why ten years ago the first and only Fashion Museum in Russia opened in Moscow.

How it all began

Reviews from visitors say that the idea of creating a fashion gallery arose after the fashion house Valentino donated one of its collections to Moscow. And a year later, through the efforts of the future artistic director and famous fashion designer Valentin Yudashkin, a new state budgetary institution was registered.

For ten years, the Fashion Museum in Moscow did not have its own premises - all events were held in guest mode on other people's sites. Despite the difficulties, from the first day of its foundation the museum participated in all the fashionable cultural events of the capital, invariably arousing public interest with its original collections. Feedback from visitors said that the museum celebrated its housewarming only at the end of 2015, when, after many years of wandering, it finally received permanent residence in Gostiny Dvor. The opening of the first exhibition took place on December 23, 2015, then more than 100 clothing models demonstrating the fashion of the early twentieth century were shown in the new exhibition halls.

From museum to exhibition center - ten years and dozens of exhibitions

Reading reviews from visitors, you can find out that today the Fashion Museum in Moscow is a modern one with permanent exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and exhibitions. Master classes and non-standard programs such as “Night at the Museum” and “Night of the Arts” are very popular among visitors. And back in 2007, future employees and enthusiasts piece by piece collected the first exhibition, beginning to bring to life the idea of creating a museum.

Dresses, outerwear, shoes and jewelry from Russia, the USA, England, France - today more than 2,000 exhibits are stored in the storerooms. Here are collected different models - from exclusive designer ones to nameless and everyday ones. Many of the items, especially shoes and accessories, required serious restoration and careful care. Reviews from visitors note that thanks to the professionalism of the staff and volunteers, all exhibits are in excellent condition today.

How does the museum live?

There is never a dull moment in the museum halls. Thousands of visitors have already been convinced of this, many of whom managed not only to view the collections, but also to participate in various gallery events.

Exhibitions and permanent displays are not all that the Fashion Museum pleases its guests with. Famous fashion designers and fashion historians regularly give lectures here. “Symbols in Art”, “Lace in Art Nouveau Costume”, “From Imperial Luxury to Soviet Chic” - the topics of the author’s lectures are varied and fascinating, and the presenters are real devotees of the history of fashion.

It also provides shelter for young talents - the staff constantly organize fashion shows here, the authors of which are college and university students.

Exhibitions and expositions

Feedback from visitors explains that the exhibitions in the exhibition halls are always thematic. The topics chosen here are unique; nothing similar is shown anywhere else in the capital. For example, the permanent exhibition “Anthology of the Long Dress” shows how women's fashion changed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. And the exhibition “Man in Uniform. Looking Through the Screen" introduces viewers to how historical military costumes are created for filming. One of the museum’s latest projects is the exhibition “On the Busy Streets of Moscow” - a retrospective display of fashion from three historical periods: the end of the 19th century, the 40s of the last century and Soviet fashion from 1950 to 1970.

An additional ambience for all shows is added by the demonstration of films and documentaries about the history of fashion, which accompany each exhibition.

Opening hours in a new home

In 2016, one of the largest under the name received a new permanent inhabitant - the Fashion Museum. Address of the establishment today: Moscow, st. Ilyinka, 4, entrance 1, second floor. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday the exhibition halls welcome visitors from 11 to 19 hours, Friday and Saturday from 12 to 20 hours, and on Thursday from 12 to 19 hours. On Monday, the Fashion Museum, like most, is closed to the public.

October 26 Theater Museum named after. A.A. Bakhrushin opened the exhibition “Theatrical costume at the turn of the century. 1990 – 2015” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. More than 260 designers from 32 countries take part in the exhibition, whose works represent development trends in the field of designer costumes for drama theatre, opera, dance, cinema, and fashion over 25 years.

The purpose of the exhibition is to examine and evaluate the design of stage costumes from the late 20th to early 21st centuries on a global scale. “With this exhibition we are not trying to define or create specific trends or directions in theatrical design or fashion design,” writes exhibition curator Igor Rusanoff, “we are more interested in the diversity of opinions, the latest developments in the field of design and technology, the diversity of ideas and character interpretations. The artistic vocabulary of images and the unique narrative style of each designer are more important than the visually unified concept of the exhibition.”

At the opening day, the curators of the exhibition “Theatrical Costume at the Turn of the Century. 1990 – 2015” from different countries presented projects of young artists as part of the exhibition “Innovative Costume of the 21st Century: New Generation”, which the Bakhrushin Museum will open at the State Historical Museum in the summer of 2019.
